Professor of Doctoral Studies
Prior to assuming the Chair of Doctoral Studies at American Lutheran Theological Seminary, Mark Mattes was the Lutheran Bible Institute Chair in Theology at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. Before this call, he served parishes in Gardner, IL and Antigo, WI. He holds a Ph.D. from The University of Chicago, an M.Div. from Luther Seminary, and earned his BA from St. Olaf College, where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He has authored several books, including Martin Luther’s Christology (Lexham, 2026), Martin Luther’s Theology of Beauty: A Reappraisal (Baker Academic, 2017), Law and Gospel in Action: Foundations, Ethics, Church (New Reformation Press, 2019), and The Role of Justification in Contemporary Theology (Eerdmans, 2003). His latest book submitted for publication is Luther’s Two Kingdoms: An Agenda for Christian Engagement with Public Life. He has also edited many other books, written chapters for books, and has authored numerous essays and reviews for peer-reviewed journals. He is an associate editor for Lutheran Quarterly Books and is a member of the Continuation Committee of the International Luther Congress. He is an AALC pastor.
