In Confessions 2 course, the focus of study is on the later writings contained in the Book of Concord, specifically, Smalcald Articles, Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope, Formula of Concord (Epitome and Solid Declaration). The first two show a more mature Luther in his approach to the issues facing the Church, specifically the papal drift from the Scriptural foundations. The Formula of Concord presents the post-Luther struggles as the Lutheran movement meets the challenges of the Reformed, but even more the infiltration into the Lutheran confessing movement itself. The goal is to bring the student into the late Reformation and post-Luther era of confessing the faith. Then the student will formulate how to apply such confessions in a contemporary situation.
Prerequisite: Theological Prolegomena and Confessions 1
