Craig_Henningfield_600x800Martin Luther wrote two catechisms, one for pastors (Large) and one for parents (Small). He broke new ground with the Small Catechism in two ways: He moved beyond the late Middle Ages catechetical instruction so that it was consistent with the Reformation center: justification by grace through faith in Christ. Ultimately Luther saw the need for the formation of the faith and the catechisms as tools to do that. Over the past five centuries both of those developments have been negated or de-emphasized. Catechesis has become little more than classroom instruction by the pastor or DCE. This course examines the purpose of Catechesis, the role of the two catechisms in Catechesis, and examination of possible steps forward in light of Luther’s intent of the Catechisms.
