The Gospel According to Matthew was until the 18th century considered the premier Gospel. Matthew writes in light of Jesus’ fulfillment of the Old Testament. As such he quotes often a passage noting its specific fulfillment in what Jesus says and does. Many see the structure of Matthew paralleling the Five books of Moses, not presenting Jesus as a new law-giver, but rather as the complete fulfillment. Matthew is the only Gospel writer to use the word εκκλεσια (ekklesia, “church”). What does that word mean in terms of understanding the “people of God”? What are the distinctives of Matthew regarding the presentation of the Gospel? What does Matthew provide for the Church today in terms of doctrinal stands, guidance for the Church, and as a source for teaching in the Church?
